Reggae Influence in Miami

Reggae Influence in Miami

Miami is known for its beaches, different cultures, music, food, and nightlife. Some would even say that it is one of the prime picks for a vacation destination.

And with Florida being just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Jamaica you best believe there is Caribbean flare all over Miami.

During concert season you can find tons of reggae concerts and festivals all throughout the city, there are Caribbean-inspired restaurants everywhere, and you can spot several reggae clothing brands along the beaches. Their love and good vibes emanate all throughout the city of Miami.

    Small Jamaican History Lesson

Jamaica has never really had it easy when it came to authority….(don’t we all)

But they have struggled particularly more than most when it came to leadership. First, they were controlled by the British in their early years and now their current government is showing signs of corruption.

So naturally, they have a little rebellious side. Which you could hear in the music they created as well. Reggae artists from the very beginning took their songs and used them as anthems about revolution and freedom.

    What is Reggae?

Reggae is a style of music that originated in Jamaica.

It started around the ’60s and became a global phenomenon, thanks to the greats like Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer, and Jimmy Cliff. They created some of the most influential reggae songs to date.

It is now the primary popular music genre in Jamaica and worldwide. It’s known for its unique sound and style as well as having lyrics that are greatly influenced by Rastafarian and philosophical beliefs.

Reggae became a way for Jamaicans to express the misfortunes that were happening in the government and to the people of Jamaica in the most harmless way possible. The artists wanted to be heard and wanted a change for their country, the primary goal was no violence.

    Reggae-Inspired Clothing

You can find reggae inspired brands all over the world and Miami, but very few of them are truly genuine. It’s honestly hard to find any real and authentic clothing nowadays, most businesses are dropshipping and getting everything printed by companies overseas that they know nothing, if not very little about. You also don’t see many store owners who are hands-on and still the face of their brand after many years in the business, but true, red-blooded Jamaicans do it differently.

Cooyah is an infamous reggae clothing store located in Miami. They have been around since 1987 and have been dominating the reggae clothing industry for decades.

And when I say AUTHENTIC clothing, you don’t get much more authentic than these guys… Cooyah Clothing originated in Jamaica, right on the streets of Kingston. The founder even grew up blocks away from the legend himself, Bob Marley. If that doesn’t say they are the real deal, I honestly don’t know what does.

Each article of clothing that is made in Cooyah’s shop comes from a love for the islands and the reggae culture. The designs capture the reggae spirit by featuring graphics like the Lion of Judah and common Jamaican slang terms, but there are also a few pieces that will spark some rebellion in you. Cooyah has several graphics that make statements against racism and making marijuana illegal.
